Popularly known as the rice bowl of the state, the Kuttanad region is known for its flourishing paddy fields.. It is not usually seen as a holiday destination and some of the interiors of the region are not yet on the travel map. The region spreads over 500 sq kilometres and is now famous, owing to the farming done here inspite of it being below sea level.

If nothing else, its a huge spread of lush green surroundings, ready to take in all the stress of visitors. A lot of home stays of the region are far flung from the main towns and provide peace and serenity for tourists who want something off the usual itinerary..

What to expect in Kuttanad

The climate here is tropical. This region is stretches across different districts, but the climate is mostly tropical, humid and hot during summers and a little cooler during the months of December, January and February. This region is quite a lovely sight during the monsoon rains in June, July and in October, November.

Lush green paddyfields and lots of coconut trees. Small villages that seem like they have been plucked out of a painting. Do take walks near the canals and next to the paddyfields during the harvest season. Quite early in the morning itself you will spot men and women hurrying to the fields with their sickle in hand. Many varieties of birds are also quite common here. Kettu vallams, a type of boat, will also be a common sight.
